CTOnews.com, January 19 (Xinhua)-- WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has been fined 5.5 million euros (currently about 40.205 million yuan) by the Irish data Protection Commission (DPC) for violating EU privacy laws, Reuters reported.

DPC, the EU's main Meta privacy regulator, said WhatsApp must reassess how to use personal data to improve its services.

Earlier, DPC issued similar orders to Facebook and Instagram, Meta's other major platforms, requiring Meta to reassess the legal basis for using personal data for targeted advertising.

CTOnews.com learned that in September 2021, DPC fined WhatsApp 225 million euros (currently about 1.645 billion yuan) for violations committed by the company during the handling of the complaint. So far, the EU has fined Meta 1.3 billion euros (currently about 9.503 billion yuan) and has launched 10 other investigations into its services.
