CTOnews.com January 19, NXP Semiconductor announced the launch of a new 28nm RFCMOS radar single chip series, suitable for the new generation of ADAS and autopilot systems. The new SAF85xx single chip family integrates NXP's high-performance radar sensing capabilities and processing technologies to provide greater flexibility for first-tier suppliers and OEM to support short-range, medium-range and long-range radar applications to meet more and more challenging NCAP security requirements.
NXP's new automotive radar SoC series includes high-performance radar transceivers and integrates multi-core radar processors based on NXP's S32R radar computing platform. Compared with the previous generation of NXP, SAF85xx's RF performance doubles and signal processing speed increases by 40 per cent. The single chip series provides 4D sensing for angle radar and forward radar and is suitable for many safety-critical ADAS applications such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, cross traffic warnings and automatic parking. Thanks to the increased flexibility provided by the new series, OEM is able to meet expanding NCAP security requirements and a surge in the number of radar sensors, and some analysts expect at least five radar sensors per car in the future.
CTOnews.com learned that NXP's new single-chip radar series provides reliable support for remote detection of objects and can distinguish between small objects next to large objects, such as cars on busy multi-lane highways and fast-moving motorcycles around trucks. The single chip series is compact in shape, and the specifications of radar sensor modules built by customers can be reduced by up to 30%.
