CTOnews.com, January 17, according to the Micro Satellite Innovation Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, on January 16, the space science (Phase II) pilot special solar wind-magnetosphere interaction panoramic imaging (SMILE) satellite development summary and prototype design review meeting was held. The SMILE satellite successfully completed the summary of the development of the initial sample and successfully entered the prototype stage.

CTOnews.com learned that the SMILE satellite is mainly used to better understand the relationship between solar activity and the Earth's magnetic field changes, to provide data support for human space weather early warning and forecasting services, and will also provide a new and important platform for human beings to explore the vast universe and expand their cognitive boundaries.

The SMILE satellite project is China's first space science exploration mission in deep cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA), according to the Institute of Micro Satellite Innovation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The scientific objectives are to detect the large-scale structure and basic model of solar wind-magnetosphere interaction, to recognize the overall variation process and periodic variation of magnetospheric substorms, and to explore the occurrence and development of magnetic storms driven by coronal mass ejection events.

According to reports, the overall unit of the project is the National Space Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the satellite system unit is the Institute of Micro Satellite Innovation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The SMILE satellite is scheduled to be launched in April 2025.
