According to this data, the Big Three in the mechanical hard disk HDD industry experienced a sharp decline in sales in 2022. In 2022, Seagate's HDD shipments fell 43.7%, and Western Digital was equally bad, down 43.0% year-on-year. Toshiba's shipments in 2022 fell 39.3% year-on-year.

Overall, HDD shipments declined 42.5 percent in 2022 to about 35 million or 36 million.

Trendfocus believes that the biggest disaster for HDD storage manufacturers today is the decline in business demand for enterprise cloud storage. Cloud storage company consolidation and inventory correction in 2022 saw 10 million to 11 million fewer hard drives purchased in the fourth quarter compared to the same period last year.

CTOnews.com learned that by category, shipments of 3.5-inch HDD drives for general users decreased by 1%, while shipments of 2.5-inch HDD drives increased by 15%. Analysts say 92% of laptops sold in 2022 will be equipped with SSDs, and that number will rise to 96% in 2023.
