Scientists have accurately determined the moon's age to be 2.03 billion years by studying lunar samples.

On December 17,2020, Chang 'e-5 sample capsule successfully landed in Siziwang Banner, Inner Mongolia, China, bringing back 1731 grams of lunar samples. This is the first time that China has completed the collection of extraterrestrial celestial bodies, and it is also the first time that humans have brought back new lunar samples in 44 years.

CTOnews.com understands that the first samples were distributed to domestic scientists on July 12,2021, and five sample distributions have been completed, totaling 198 65.1 grams. The first batch of research results was released in October 2021, and subversive understanding was obtained in terms of volcanic activity age and source nature of the six areas. Four papers were published in Science and Nature.

In September 2022, the National Space Administration and the National Atomic Energy Agency jointly released the first discovery of a new mineral "Chang'e Stone" by Chinese scientists on the moon. This mineral is the sixth new mineral discovered by humans on the moon. China has become the third country in the world to discover new minerals on the moon.

Li Xianhua, academician of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said Chang 'e-6 would be the first time humans would sample and return to the back of the moon. According to previous information, Chang 'e-6 mission is planned to be launched in Wenchang around 2025, and will carry out on-site investigation and analysis of six areas on the back of the moon, and carry out systematic and long-term laboratory research on samples.
