CTOnews.com, January 17, according to the Science and Technology Daily, Ren Xifeng, academician team of the University of Science and Technology of China, in cooperation with foreign counterparts, based on the optical quantum integrated chip, demonstrated the interference of four-photon nonlinear generation process for the first time in the world. The related results were published in the authoritative optics academic journal Optica on January 13.

Although the two-photon nonlinear interference process has been realized for more than 20 years and has been applied in many emerging quantum technologies, it was not extended to the multi-photon process in theory until 2017. however, no new progress has been made in experiments due to the need for high phase stability and path coincidence. Optical quantum integrated chip has gradually developed into an ideal platform for displaying new quantum applications and developing new quantum devices because of its high phase stability and reconfiguration, and also provides the possibility for the study of multiphoton nonlinear interference.
Ren Xifeng's research team has been committed to the development of silicon-based optical quantum integrated chip and related application research for a long time and has made a series of important progress. On the basis of previous work, the research group cooperated with Professor MarioKrenn of Max Planck Institute of Optical Science in Germany to further cascade multiphoton quantum light source module, filter module and delay module. The coherence and cancellation process of four-photon nonlinear generation process is demonstrated for the first time in the world. However, no obvious change with phase is observed in the two-photon coincidence, which is consistent with the theoretical expectation. The whole experiment is carried out on a silicon-based integrated photonic chip with a size of only 3.8x0.8mm2.
CTOnews.com learned that this result successfully extends the two-photon nonlinear interference process to multiphoton process, which lays a foundation for many new applications, such as new quantum state preparation, remote quantum metrology and new non-local multiphoton interference effect observation.
