CTOnews.com, January 16, according to Cnews, a Russian company has launched a motherboard for its "domestic processor" Baikal-S for storage systems, which looks shocking.

First of all, let's talk about this Russian-developed Baikal-S (Baikal) processor. The processor, launched by the Russian company Baikal Electronics, has 48 cores based on Arm instruction set architecture (ISA).

Its 48-core reference frequency 2.0GHz, maximum acceleration 2.5GHz, thermal design power consumption of 120W, supports four-way parallelism, and integrates and encapsulates a self-developed RISC-V architecture coprocessor for secure startup and management, with performance comparable to Intel Xeon 6148 (20 cores @ 2.4GHz) or AMD Xiaolong 7351 (16 cores @ 2.9GHz).

The Russian enterprise Eliptech now offers a matching server motherboard ET113-MB, which provides 6-way 72bit storage interfaces, supports up to 768GB DDR4-3200 ECC memory (single channel 128GB), five PCIe 4.0x16 slots, and provides a USB 2.0 controller, two gigabit network ports, three SATA and four U.2 general I / O interfaces.

Although the product looks good on paper, it is almost symbolic. Because the Baikal-S1000 processor (made by TSMC's 16nm process) can no longer be mass-produced due to geographical conflicts, the CPU used on this motherboard is still a non-mass-produced version.

Considering that the Baikal BE-S1000 processor has extraordinary I / O capabilities, it can support a considerable number of storage devices. However, the Eliptech ET113-MB motherboard has four U.2 ports, all of which are located on the outside, so the practicality will be somewhat limited.

At the same time, there are several slots on the motherboard for the external board, but their position is a little awkward, and you can't install the external card product unless you remove the bracket. At the same time, the motherboard also has audio connectors, which means it can be used to build desktop workstations, but it is not clear how to use desktop workstations without a video card.

From the outside, the motherboard uses the SSI MEB specification, which means it can theoretically be used for server / storage systems, but this is debatable given the number of 3.5in or 2.5in drives.
