Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
According to the news on the evening of January 16, Beijing time, it is reported that in 2023, large layoffs in the US technology industry show no sign of slowing down. According to Layoff.fyi, a website that tracks unemployment in the technology industry, an average of about 1600 tech workers have been laid off every day since 2023.
Just 15 days after 2023, 91 technology companies have cut 24151 jobs worldwide, accounting for 15 per cent of the total layoffs in the technology industry in 2022, according to data compiled by Layoffs.ai. In the past 2022, more than 1000 technology companies cut 154256 jobs worldwide.
On Layoffs.fyi 's layoff list, Amazon, Meta and Salesforce cut about 18000, 11000 and 8000 jobs between November 2022 and January 2023, respectively.
Among them, Amazon's layoffs mainly affect office workers, including equipment and book businesses, as well as human resources departments. Meta made company-wide layoffs, including Reality Labs, the metacosmos business unit, while Salesforce layoffs mainly affected Slack and MuleSoft business units.
The current round of tech layoffs began last year, mainly as a result of a surge in the number of employees caused by massive hiring and expansion by technology companies during the epidemic. At the end of 2022, fears of an impending US recession, coupled with weak corporate performance, led to massive layoffs that continued into 2023.
Mark Benioff, co-CEO of Salesforce, said: "during the outbreak, our revenue continued to grow, causing us to hire too many staff. But now, we are facing an economic downturn and have to make layoffs, for which I am responsible."
In fact, this round of layoffs is not limited to the technology industry, the media, entertainment and banking are also not immune. Last week, banking giant Goldman Sachs began to cut more than 3000 jobs worldwide. In addition, BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, will cut 500 jobs for the first time in four years.
