Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, January 16 (Xinhua) CNN reported that Contrails in the aviation industry is even more harmful to global warming than fuel emissions. In a survey of the impact of the aviation industry on climate change in 2000-2018, it was found that the warming impact of the condensation wake accounted for 57%, exceeding the carbon dioxide emissions produced by fuels.
CTOnews.com small class: condensation wake (Contrails), also known as aircraft cloud, steam wake, track cloud, or tail cloud, is a visible cloud formed by concentrated water vapor emitted by jet engines.
The reason for the formation is that the hot exhaust gas emitted by the aircraft engine will quickly condense into tiny water droplets when cooled in the air. When the air temperature is low enough, aircraft clouds may also be made up of tiny ice crystals.
In addition, the wingtip vortex caused by dragging from the wing tip or flap is sometimes partly visible because of the condensation of water vapor in the vortex core. Each vortex is a large swirl of air, and the air pressure at the center of the vortex is very low. The generation of this wingtip vortex is different from the condensation principle of engine exhaust. A wingtip vortex is sometimes referred to as a steam wake.
The study also found that there is a relatively simple solution to this problem. The condensation wake requires cold and humid atmospheric conditions, and the stay is not very long. The researchers say most of the effects can be avoided by targeting specific flights that are most likely to produce wakes and slightly changing their flight paths.
On the impact of condensation wakes on climate, British volcanologist and entrepreneur Adam Durant said: "in theory, we can solve this problem in the aviation industry in a year or two. 80 per cent of the condensation wakes come from 5 per cent of the 10 per cent of flights. Simply changing the direction of a small number of flights can actually avoid most of the wake climate impact."
Scientists calculate that solving the wake problem will cost less than $1 billion a year by 2021, but the benefits will be more than 1000 times that. A study from Imperial College London shows that the transfer of 1.7 per cent of flights alone can reduce the impact of climate damage from the wake by up to 59 per cent.
