Twitter boss Elon Musk has said he will resign as Twitter CEO, but only if he finds someone "stupid enough" to take over the job.

Musk is ready to resign as CEO of Twitter According to sources familiar with the matter, Musk does not seem to have officially started the selection process for CEO succession. Given Musk's frequent reneging, he may not be looking for a new CEO for Twitter. Even if one is found, Musk says he will be in charge of the "software and server team," which is basically the entire Twitter company.

Either way, Musk does need to find a CEO, not only because he told Twitter investors he would, but because it's the rational thing for him to do. If Musk does hand over the Twitter CEO position, one of the following five people may be selected by him:

1. Former COO Sandberg

Sandberg This may be the most obvious choice, especially if Musk keeps his word and continues to lead Twitter after naming a new CEO. Sheryl Sandberg has the advertisers and connections Musk needs to fix Twitter's deteriorating business. Sandberg is a freelance after leaving Facebook parent Meta last year. But the problem is that Musk is not a Facebook fan, and the two may not get along very well. And Sandberg seems happy to focus on philanthropy and family life lately.

2. Twitch CEO Hill

As co-founder and current head of gaming streaming platform Twitch, Emmett Shear successfully sold a social media company to Amazon and has the experience Musk needs to turn Twitter into a creator video platform. Sources say Twitch's organizational structure has been in disarray recently. He hasn't led a public company, though, and Musk plans to take Twitter public again in a few years. Additionally, Twitch has been unable to successfully expand into its primary market segment: player streaming.

3. TikTok COO Papas

Vanessa Pappas has the experience Musk needs, first helping set up YouTube's early creators program and most recently serving as COO of TikTok. Sources say she may be planning to leave TikTok sometime this year. But if Musk wants to lead Twitter primarily by looking for people known to big advertisers, she won't be the first choice because she focuses primarily on products and creators.

4. Yahoo CEO Landsner

In addition to his brief stint as CEO of dating app Tinder, Jim Lanzone has a more operational background in media and advertising. He leads Yahoo for now, but he may jump ship at the right time. His connections to the advertising world and operational experience are something Musk can tap into, and he has the ability to deal with Musk's erratic behavior. It's unclear whether he'd be willing to work for Musk and take over the headache of Twitter.

5. Instagram founder Strom

Kevin Systrom, co-founder and former CEO of Instagram, is definitely the first choice when it comes to career origins and products. He has been quiet since leaving Instagram in 2018 after a conflict with Mark Zuckerberg. But his podcast last year showed interest in the TikTok model of social media, which separates stream recommendations from someone's social graph. That's exactly what Musk wants Twitter to focus on. But he's already worked for an opinionated founder/ CEO (Zuckerberg) and made a lot of money, and probably doesn't want to do it again. And he doesn't have the clout in advertising Musk might want.
