Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, January 15 (Xinhua) Microsoft's IVAS project is a military version of commercial Hololens, and by 2023, U.S. army soldiers will wear this AR headset on the battlefield for the first time.

According to previous news, starting next year, the US Army will use Microsoft's military Hololens IVAS (Integrated Vision Enhancement system) on the battlefield for the first time. The United States Army plans to deliver 5000 IVAS 1.0s and another 5000 IVAS version 1.1 to the force.

However, it is reported that the U.S. Congress has banned the Army from ordering another 6900 IVAS heads worth $400 million in the current fiscal year. In contrast, the US Army will receive only 5000 IVAS headers for training. Although Congress rejected the $400 million budget request, it approved a budget of $40 million for the development of an improved version of IVAS 1.2.

According to previous military reports, the header versions delivered so far are 1.0 and 1.1, and they have significant technical defects. The soldiers reportedly developed headaches, eye discomfort and nausea during the test, which lasted less than three hours.

At the end of December last year, the United States Army allocated $125 million for the development of military Hololens 1.2, which came from the previous year's budget. The contract requires improvements to deficiencies found in previous testing tasks. Version 1.2 of the Battle head display will provide a new shape, a "lower profile heads-up display" and higher comfort, better distributed weight and a new user interface.

"the Army is fully committed to IVAS and the leapfrog capabilities it will provide for soldiers to win on the battlefield," the Army wrote. "IVAS's' progressive combat'is scheduled to begin in September 2023."

The army's plan is to spend as much as $22 billion on the project over 10 years, and says it currently spends only about 2% of that total. The previously mentioned US $40 million for development and another US $16.5 million are listed as "project increases" for the IVAS project in fiscal year 2023.

CTOnews.com learned that the IVAS program, which has been running since 2018, aims to provide American soldiers with audio-visual abilities like those found in computer games. For example, they can see friends and enemies through the wall, or have the help of automatic aiming.

Microsoft did not comment on the news. Microsoft also keeps a low profile when it comes to the commercial version of Hololens. Recently, Microsoft's XR boss hinted that Microsoft is still developing Hololens and that there may be updates, but did not elaborate.
