Water is not only the key to sustaining human life, but its components-hydrogen and oxygen-can be used as rocket propellants, and in NASA's vision the moon will become a "gas station" in space.

This may be critical for long-term missions, allowing spacecraft to refuel on the moon rather than towing all fuel from Earth. Moreover, because the moon's gravity is 1/6 of that of the earth, it is a relatively easy springboard to other parts of the solar system.

NASA is considering creating a nuclear reactor on the moon.

This is one of several initiatives launched by NASA under its Artemis program to help astronauts gain access to electricity, transportation, living and other energy supplies.

The work is still largely in its infancy, and NASA needs a lot of money and technical support to build such a huge project.

Although NASA executives are very optimistic about the project, it will take years of technical and financial accumulation to actually move forward.

NASA has begun to develop the technology needed to enable astronauts to survive on the surface for a long time. Last June, the agency and the Department of Energy awarded contracts to three companies worth $5 million each to develop nuclear power systems.

The system can be ready for launch by the end of the century for testing on the moon. These systems will generate 40 kilowatts of electricity, enough to power six or seven American homes for about 10 years.

NASA is also planning to build solar farms, using vertically pointing arrays to capture the sun's angle on the horizon. It is exploring how to make the best use of so-called "in situ resources" (in situ resources), lunar materials such as Regolith.
