A new theoretical study shows that smart aliens are only interested in technologically advanced planets, and Earth is not included in this category.

Smart aliens may not be particularly interested in planets with life, and if life exists on many planets in the Milky way, then aliens may only be more interested in planets that have not only biology but also signs of advanced technology.

The study explores the Fermi paradox, which holds that, given the age of the universe, smart aliens are now likely to have made long-distance space trips, so they are likely to visit Earth.

Why haven't aliens visited Earth yet? The study suggests that life is actually very common in the Milky way. If many rocky planets in the star's habitable zone have life, aliens may not waste their resources sending signals to each planet, which could lead them to eventually try to communicate with alien algae or amoebas.

If life is universal, then smart aliens may be more interested in signs of advanced technology. But technological signals can be difficult to detect. Since the 1930s, the earth has only sent out signals that can be detected from space in the form of radio waves. In theory, these signals have now reached about 15000 stars and their orbiting planets, but this is only a fraction of the 400 billion stars in the Milky way. In addition, any reply from aliens takes time to return, so since Earth began broadcasting outside Earth, only stars within a range of 50 light-years have had time to respond.

To make matters worse, the oldest radio signals on earth are not deliberately broadcast into space, so they may gradually decay after about a light-year of propagation, making them impossible for aliens to detect.

Unless the number of intelligent civilizations is so abundant that there are more than 100 million technologically advanced planets in the Milky way, Earth's signals may not have reached another form of intelligent life. However, over time, as our planet sends out more and more radio signals, Earth's advanced technology signals are likely to find alien listeners who are interested in us.

The results show that there may be no intelligent civilization within about 50 light-years of our planet, but intelligent civilization may be not far away, waiting for our call.
