CTOnews.com, January 15, Microsoft admitted on January 13 that the Microsoft Defender update led to the accidental deletion of application shortcuts to the start menu and task bar in Win10. In today's updated Health console (Health Dashboard), Microsoft admitted that Win11 was also affected and that these mistakenly deleted shortcuts could not be recovered.

"Microsoft launched an investigation into the disappearance of start menu and taskbar shortcuts on enterprise Win10 devices."

Microsoft admitted on the health console:

After the user installs the Microsoft Defender 1.381.2140.0 security update, the start menu, docking to the taskbar, and application shortcuts on the desktop may all be hidden or deleted.

In addition, errors may occur when trying to run executable (.exe) files that depend on shortcut files. The affected devices are mainly enabled with the Atack Surface Reduction (ASR) rule "block Win32 API calls from Office macros".

After installing Security Intelligence version 1.381.2140.0, the test results caused some Windows shortcut (.lnk) files that match the error detection pattern to be deleted.

Windows devices used by home or small business users may not be affected by this problem.

A list of affected versions is attached to CTOnews.com:

Client:

Windows 11, version 22H2

Windows 10, version 22H2

Windows 11, version 21H2

Windows 10, version 21H2

Windows 10, version 20H2

Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019

Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2016

Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB

The server side is not affected

Microsoft added:

Next step: this issue has been resolved in Security Intelligence update version 1.381.2164.0. Installing security intelligence update version 1.381.2164.0 or later should prevent this problem, but it will not restore previously deleted shortcuts. You will need to recreate or restore these shortcuts in other ways.
