CTOnews.com January 13 news, HDMI licensing company (HDMI LA) official said that HDMI Alt mode is dead. HDMI LA believes that Alt mode has a narrow use and is not used frequently by consumers.

HDMI LA believes that one of the important reasons why Alt mode is so meaningless is that companies like Apple have begun to reinstall HDMI ports on their products. HDMI Alt mode also no longer offers any advantages. HDMI LA therefore no longer continues to update Alt mode. This means that HDMI output must come from somewhere else on the laptop.

HDMI LA stands for HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc. (HDMI Licensing Corporation in Chinese) is the only organization that licenses HDMI technology and is the sole authorized agent for HDMI trademarks. The process of manufacturers obtaining HDMI technology licenses is commonly known as HDMI certification.

CTOnews.com Small Classroom: Alt mode is also known as alternative mode. This mode allows HDMI-enabled source devices to connect directly to HDMI-enabled devices such as HDTVs and PC monitors using USB Type-C connectors. It will deliver native HDMI signals over a simple cable without the need for connector adapters or dongles.

HDMI Alt Mode will support all features of HDMI 1.4b, such as resolutions up to 4K, Audio Return Channel (ARC), 3D, HDMI Ethernet Channel, and Consumer Electronics Control (CEC). HDMI cables will utilize USB Type-C connectors on the source side and any HDMI connectors on the display side.

HDMI Alt mode has never won favor with manufacturers since its introduction. HDMI LA indicates that there are no special adapter products on the market at present.

Similarly, at the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), people familiar with the authentication process haven't seen a true USB-C to HDMI adapter yet. This is good news for consumers, avoiding the risk of using HDMI adapters with traditional USB-C ports that support DisplayPort.
