CTOnews.com January 13 news, the Unity desktop environment and Ubuntu Unity maintainer Rudra Saraswat today announced detailed information about UnityX. UnityX is a derivative of the Unity 7 desktop environment with additional features and support for new GNU / Linux technologies such as Wayland.

UnityX (formerly known as UnityX 10) was originally developed as the next major version of the official version of Ubuntu Unity. Now the development team has adjusted to release it as a flavor version of Unity 7.7 and provide more customization options.

UnityX looks almost the same as Unity 7, but without using Compiz, users can choose Wayland as the window manager, replace or remove the top panel, and adjust the transparency of Unity Dash and Launcher.

UnityX also comes with a new Plotinus-based HUD, a HUD-like command panel for GTK3 applications that supports more applications than Unity7's HUD and can open multiple applications at the same time.

CTOnews.com also learned that the system setup application allows you to change most UnityX desktop settings, as well as a new way to configure UnityX and replace its components.

UnityX also supports the UWidgets plug-in / widget system for Unity 7.7, as well as new session indicators, Unity7 appearance indicators, and the ability to open files directly from the global menu.

Both UnityX and Unity 7.7 will be released as part of the upcoming release of Ubuntu Unity 23.04 (Lunar Lobster) in late April 2023.
