It was Gartner's biggest quarterly decline since tracking the PC market in the mid-1990s. PC shipments reached 286.2 million units in 2022, 16.2% lower than in 2021.

"expectations of the global recession, rising inflation and higher interest rates have had a significant impact on PC demand," Mikako Kitagawa, chief analyst at Gartner, said in a statement. "many consumers have bought relatively new PC during the outbreak, causing consumer PC demand to fall to an all-time low."

He continued: "the corporate PC market has also been affected by the economic slowdown. Corporate PC demand began to decline in the third quarter of 2022, but now the market has turned from weakness to deterioration. Corporate buyers are extending the life cycle of personal computers and delaying purchases, which means the corporate market may not return to growth until 2024."
