Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com January 13, BeOS-based Haiku OS Beta 4 was released on December 23, 2022, promising to provide many of the benefits of macOS and Windows systems. The biggest highlight of the system is that it inherits many advantages of BeOS, and it takes only a few seconds to turn on / off on most devices.
What is even more legendary about Haiku OS is that the previous BeOS was almost selected by Jobs to become the macOS system we are familiar with now.
CTOnews.com small class: Jean-Louis Gassee, the head of Apple in France, left the company to start a new company, Be Inc. Be continues to develop PowerPC-based computers BeBox and BeOS--, an ultra-fast modern media operating system with fast disk I / O, rendering and kernel.
When Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997, Apple needed a new operating system, and the competition was between NeXTStep and BeOS, developed by NeXT, another company of Jobs.
Apple eventually chose NeXT, and over the next few years, NeXTStep was modified to Mac OS X, followed by the development of iPhone OS 1.
But BeOS is not dead. A group of dedicated developers have been working silently on Haiku for more than 15 years, working hard in their spare time.
Haiku B4 is compatible with most modern and older hardware, including most Intel and Apple Silicon systems, Mac, PC, and ARM-based computers. Given its provenance, it works well on old Cy Young laptops from the Windows 7 era.
Jean-Louis Gassi founded Be in 1991 with a group of Apple employees, including AppleNewton developer Steve Sakoman. Be has developed a new operating system for multi-CPU and multi-threaded applications from the beginning of its design. At the same time, Apple has been unable to launch its new operating system Copland and is looking for a replacement. Gassi thinks this is a golden opportunity.
In 1996, Gassi asked for $400 million to allow Apple Computer to use BeOS. However, Apple estimated the total value of Be at $8000, so the offer rose to $120 million, which later rose to $200 million. When the deal failed, Apple bought NeXTSTEP instead and regained Steve Jobs.
Thanks to CTOnews.com users for reminding us that more information about BeOS can be found at ComputerBase and Theregister.
