Jean-Louis Gassi founded Be in 1991 with a group of Apple employees, including AppleNewton developer Steve Sakoman. Be has developed a new operating system for multi-CPU and multi-threaded applications from the beginning of its design. At the same time, Apple has been unable to launch its new operating system Copland and is looking for a replacement. Gassi thinks this is a golden opportunity.

In 1996, Gassi asked for $400 million to allow Apple Computer to use BeOS. However, Apple estimated the total value of Be at $8000, so the offer rose to $120 million, which later rose to $200 million. When the deal failed, Apple bought NeXTSTEP instead and regained Steve Jobs.
