CTOnews.com, January 13 (Xinhua) Samsung's MicroLED technology is basically limited to the company's high-end televisions, but that may be about to change. Samsung has begun commercializing MicroLED technology for smartwatches, according to a new report from South Korea.

Samsung Galaxy Watch currently uses OLED displays. Samsung also supplies smartwatch OLED panels to other manufacturers. The commercialization of its MicroLED technology will enable future Galaxy Watch models to adopt more advanced panels.

Samsung is one of the largest suppliers of Apple's Apple Watch OLED panels. Recent reports say Apple wants to turn its smartwatch to the MicroLED. This could lead the company to reduce the purchase of OLED panels from Samsung. By becoming a supplier of smartwatch MicroLED panels, Samsung shows that it can ensure that it continues to supply Apple.

CTOnews.com learned that the MicroLED panel will provide more significant improvements than OLED: brighter, better contrast and better color performance. Visibility is better in direct sunlight. MicroLED panels are also more energy efficient, allowing smartwatches to extend battery life.

Samsung shows that a new team was set up at the end of 2022 to develop the project. The team's goal is to commercialize the technology in the near future. However, it will be a long process, and Samsung has shown that it hopes to complete the development within this year.
