On Thursday, January 13, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released the 2022 UFO report. Since March 2021, the US government has received more than 360 new eyewitness reports, about half of which have so far been unable to explain why, according to the report.

The official name of the report is the 2022 Annual report on unidentified Air phenomena. The report is authorized by the Defense Authorization Act 2022 and created by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) and the newly established Global exception Resolution Office (AARO). The information collected comes from intelligence agencies, the military Intelligence Office, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Department of Energy, and NASA.

ODNI assessed 366 new eyewitness reports received since the establishment of AARO. Among them, the targets covered in 26 reports were drones, 163 were considered balloons or "balloon-like entities", and 6 were aerial "sundries", such as birds or aerial plastic shopping bags. The UFO mentioned in the last 171st reports still "has not found an explanation".

"the preliminary study does not mean that the reported unidentified flying objects have been characterized," ODNI said in the report. "some of the unidentified UFO appear to show unusual flight characteristics or performance and need further analysis."

In short, the US Department of Defense and intelligence agencies still seem unable to explain some of the mysterious flying objects they have seen over the past few decades, flying in restricted military airspace. ODNI said most of the new sightings came from U.S. Navy and Air Force pilots who saw UFO with their own eyes and submitted reports during combat missions.

Although the report warns that UFO poses a collision risk to flight safety and aviation assets, pilots may need to "adjust flight mode". But so far, there have been no reports of a collision between a US plane and UFO.

Under pressure from Congress to investigate UFO sightings, the Department of Defense actively encourages pilots and others to report unexplained sightings. U. S. intelligence agencies released their first report on the issue in 2021. The report reviewed 144 reports on UFO, and by the end of the study, investigators were able to explain the cause of the sightings only once. However, investigators found no evidence that the UFO in these sightings represented extraterrestrial life.

Although some of the 366 newly confirmed reports covered events in the 17 years prior to March 2021, 250 of the recorded sightings occurred after March 2021. "UFO sightings continue to occur in restricted or sensitive airspace, highlighting concerns about flight safety or enemy collection activities," ODNI said. "We will continue to assess."

Representative Adam Schiff, Democrat of California and former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, welcomed the release of the report. "I appreciate ODNI's efforts to study and describe the UFO report, which is committed to ensuring transparency by releasing unclassified summaries to the American public," he said. "UFO remains a national security issue and I continue to support a thorough investigation of all eyewitness reports."
