In March 2004, counter-Terrorism Elite: operation Zero (CS:CZ), the expansion of counter-Terrorism Elite, was released. The ill-fated work was developed alternately by at least four studios, and the last one responsible for completing it was Turtle Rock Studio, which was just established in 2002.
Turtle Rock has written AI code for robot players for CS, which makes it possible to design stand-alone content based on CS. In CS:CZ, there is a stand-alone campaign of dozens of tasks called "Deleted Scenes". This campaign is the work of Turtle Rock, which integrates the content designed by previous studios into a complete task package.
A few months after "cut content" designed a well-developed mission script, "counter-Terrorism Elite: origins" (CS:S) was released. This work uses the latest origin engine in the same style as half Life 2, as well as AI developed by Turtle Rock, which also gives Turtle Rock some ideas to develop new content on its own.
One of the ideas comes from a game that many CS players have tried: adjust the weapon settings of hostile AI so that they can only use daggers for melee attacks, and only human players can use guns normally to find a way out under the chase of AI.
The console command that allows AI to use only daggers continues until CS:GO, which has been broken by Turtle Rock in the process of developing robots, and eventually evolved into a classic four-man game called "Survival" in 2008.
"Survival" has a "developer review" mode, players will enter the actual map, experience the game, while combining specific game elements to listen to the developer's ideas.
Mike Booth, founder of Turtle Rock, explained in this model: "when we developed robots for counter-Terrorism Elite: CS:S, we found that some of us armed to our teeth with automatic weapons against 30 hostile robots wielding daggers."
The developer review model for Survival 1 follows the idea of "working together against hordes of enemies." Turtle Rock spent months building a derivative module of CS:S, called Terror-Strike, to present their preliminary ideas to Valve CEO G. Pang. With regard to this Terror-Strike, there is very little information left on the Internet, except for some screenshots with very low resolution and difficult to tell the true from the false.
The online female model from Terror-Strike looks like Zoe, the heroine of Survival, until January 6 this year, when a batch of data on the development of V Club games leaked to the Internet, the source of which is temporarily unknown. This data can be viewed with the Origin engine's level editor, involving old games such as CS:CZ, CS:S, Legion Fortress 2 and half Life 2, mostly deletions that are not used in actual games, such as maps and new game modes.
Source Youtube@Tyler McVicker on the same day, a module developer named Wolfcl0ck found a CS:S map called Zombie_City (Zombie City) from the leaked data.
On the basis of retaining the original design of the map, Wolfcl0ck made it into a complete module that can run normally in CS:S. To this end, he made some adjustments to the map, such as adding new materials, repairing the unfinished texture in the map, and writing a map description by himself.
Wolfcl0ck uploads the module and the original map data to the module website GameBanana for any player to download freely. He also uploaded a video clip of his own test to Youtube, in which he had a good time with 30 AI "zombies" who could only attack with a knife.
Zombie_City is a dim map of the city. Although there is no scene mapping, less furniture or vehicles and other objects, veteran players should recognize that some of the terrain structures are similar to the "apartment" map at the first level of the "No Mercy" chapter of "Survival 1".
For example, Wolfcl0ck, who can't get up after going down, believes that this Zombie_City is likely to be the starting point of "the road to survival." it may be the concept version of Terror-Strike shown by Turtle Rock to the V Society, or a derivative version that has appeared in subsequent development. Youtube game anchor Tyler McVicker also agrees that this module is the first prototype version of Survival.
Although this version of "A Historic leak" does not have terrible special infections and talkative survivors, a linear map coupled with the idea of cooperative shooting of melee enemies is enough to show the shadow of "the road to survival".
Whether or not Turtle Rock succeeded in persuading G Fang with this map alone, in 2005, "the Road to Survival" was authorized and supported by V Society, and the development work went smoothly.
In 2008, Valve returned Turtle Rock, which was originally in partnership, and changed its name to Valve South. After the release of Survival 1, Valve and Valve South parted ways due to various internal problems. Valve still holds the copyright of Survival, while Turtle Rock was rebuilt in December of the same year.
But in fact, only seven of the makers of Survival 1 joined the rebuilt Turtle Rock. Even founder Booth stayed at Valve, where he contributed to the development of the 2012 release of "counter-Terrorism Elite: global offensive" (CS:GO) before leaving in 2013.
Employees who leave to Turtle Rock show the source Youtube@Crowbcat with a highlighted name-that is, very few people in the new Turtle Rock studio know about the prototype of Terror-Strike, and perhaps few understand Booth's pure pleasure of shooting AI. This may provide an explanation for their situation over the next decade: their subsequent development of two FPS, evolution, an asymmetrically confrontational game, and Blood Vengeance, a spiritual sequel to Survival, have not been as successful as Survival.
