CTOnews.com, January 12, Microsoft recently announced the acquisition of DPU technology provider Fungible, a combinable infrastructure provider designed to accelerate network and storage performance in data centers through efficient, low-power data processing units (DPU).

Microsoft says Fungible's technology helps to achieve a high-performance, scalable, decomposed, scale-out data center infrastructure with reliability and security. The Fungible team will join Microsoft's data center infrastructure engineering team and will focus on providing a variety of DPU solutions, network innovation and hardware system improvements.

DPU is the abbreviation of data processing unit (Data processing unit), which is a kind of programmable electronic circuit, which has the functions of data processing and hardware acceleration. Data processing unit is mainly used for data calculation and processing in the data center. A DPU usually contains a central processing unit, a network card, and a programmable data hardware acceleration engine, so DPU can process data as well as network packets like a CPU.

Microsoft said today's announcement is a further indication of Microsoft's commitment to long-term differentiated investment in data center infrastructure, enhancing its wide range of technologies and products, including offloading, improving latency, increasing server density in the data center, optimizing energy efficiency and reducing costs.

CTOnews.com learned that the acquisition would make Azure more advantageous in the current competition, and Microsoft did not disclose the amount of the deal. Amazon AWS, Microsoft's main competitor to Azure, has been developing proprietary solutions in this area for some time, called Nitro. Traditional hardware manufacturers have also shown strong interest in DPU, and AMD recently acquired the area of Thinking power.
