Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
On the morning of January 12, Beijing time, it was reported that Apple had promised to step up disclosure about why some apps were removed from the App Store App Store. There have been allegations that Apple's decision-making process in this regard is not transparent.
Activist investors among Apple shareholders received a commitment from the company earlier this month, according to three people familiar with the matter. At Apple's annual general meeting in March last year, nearly 1% of shareholders voted for a resolution calling for greater transparency in Apple's relations with foreign governments.
This time, petitioners led by US-based Azzad Asset Management and UK activist investor platform Tulipshare called on Apple to provide more details in this regard. Apple declined to comment on the news.
According to the commitment, Apple will provide investors with more details about how many apps have been removed from their shelves in the transparency report, including how many apps each government requires to be removed, whether the requirements are based on laws and regulations, and whether Apple has complied with these requirements, according to the source.
Constance Ricketts, head of shareholder advocacy at Tulipshare, said the previous disclosure model kept shareholders in the dark about Apple's decision.
Tulipshare said Apple had agreed to publish in its next transparency report the legal basis for governments' request for app removal, which would be broken down by country and app category. But people familiar with the matter said Apple would still not explain why a specific app had been removed from the shelves, as the petitioners had hoped.
Apple has also promised to disclose by country how many apps have been removed from the shelves for violating App Store rules or developer licensing agreements, according to people familiar with the matter.
"this information will help determine whether Apple's decisions stifle freedom of information and speech," Rickitz said. "
