It is reported that Apple will completely replace the Intel model on the new Mac Mini and may release it in the first half of this year.

Will Apple replace or cut the Intel Mac Mini?

At last year's WWDC conference, Apple introduced the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with M2 chips, but did not mention Mac Mini at all. Apple's failure to update Mac mini shows either that Apple is not making it a priority or that Mac mini is preparing something different.

CTOnews.com learned that Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported in April 2022 that Apple was testing the Mac mini with the M1 Pro processor codenamed J374, as well as the M1 Max Mac mini.

Gurman also said Apple is testing an M2 Mac mini codenamed J473, which has eight CPU cores and 10 GPU cores (matching Apple's chip on the WWDC), as well as a Mac mini with M2 Pro chip codenamed J474.

In response, MacWorld predicts that Apple will launch two models in 2023, the M2 chip will replace the existing M1 chip model, and the M2 Pro model will replace the existing Intel model.

M2 Pro Mac mini release date

Gurman said in the June 2022 Power On Newsletter that Apple is about to launch an Mac mini model with M2 and M2 Pro chips.

"Apple will launch a more powerful Mac mini later this year and more high-end MacBook Pro,2022 models between the fall and the first half of 2023," Gurman wrote at the time.

However, Apple did not launch a new Mac Mini in 2022, so MacWorld may launch a spring special event or a new Mac Mini with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips in the form of a press release in the future.

M2 Pro Mac mini design

In order to distinguish between the Intel version and the Apple Silicon version of Mac Mini, Apple uses dark gray Intel models and silver M1 models. M2 Pro Mac mini may also be retained as a silver design.

However, the design of Mac mini may be about to change. Since its inception in 2005, Mac mini has been using a similar square design. Over time, it became thinner, there was no CD drive, and the color changed. It is said that, according to the rendering, the size of the next-generation Mac mini will be further reduced to less than an inch in height. However, these more compact design rumors seem to have something to do with the new M2 version of Mac mini.

M2 Pro Mac mini specification

M2 Pro:10 core CPU, up to 20 cores GPU, highest 48GB RAM

The M2 Pro chip is estimated to be equipped with 18-20 GPU cores and possibly 10 or 12 CPU cores. There are reports that Apple may adopt a new 3nm process for M2 Pro chips, which could make the gap between M2 and M2 Pro greater than that between M1 and M1 Pro.

M2 supports 24GB maximum, so M2 Pro is expected to support 48GB unified memory.

The price of the new Mac mini

The price of the Mac mini with M2 chip starts at $699 / £699 (about 5760 yuan), while the larger model costs $899 / £899 (about 7408 yuan). The M2 Pro Mac Mini, an alternative to Intel, starts at $1099 / £1099 (about 9056 yuan).
