Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com January 11 news, Apple's latest Mac Pro series of products is still in 2019, Apple is expected to update the Mac Pro product line this year. Since Apple launched M1 chip in 2020, from M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra to M2 chip at the beginning of 2022, it is gradually transitioning from Intel chip to its own Apple Silicon.
Mac Pro release date
Apple announced in June 2020 that all Mac product lines would transition to Apple Silicon self-developed chips in the next two years. Even based on the original M1 Mac (November 2020), Apple didn't achieve that goal.
CTOnews.com learned that Bloomberg Mark Mark Gurman said the main reason for the delay was "changes in the company's chip and manufacturing plans."
Gurman believes this has something to do with Apple's problem with its ultimate chipset, that is, the most expensive Mac Pro model has 48 CPU cores and 152 graphics cores. Gurman said Apple "may abandon this high-end configuration" because of the "complexity and cost" of producing an Mac with this specification.
Goolman said in January that Apple had removed the high-end configuration of the Mac Pro (48 CPU cores and 152 GPU cores). MacWorld speculates that Apple may launch a new Mac Pro at the WWDC in June, but it may also be delayed until October-November.
Mac Pro selling price
Another issue affecting the development of the new Mac Pro is how much consumers are willing to spend on the new machine, Gurman said in the December 2022 newsletter.
"based on Apple's current pricing structure, the M2 Extreme version of Mac Pro could cost at least $10000-without any other upgrades-making it a very niche product that may not be worth the development cost, engineering resources, and production resources it needs," Gurman wrote.
The current Mac Pro starts at $5999 / £5499, but the most expensive option could cost more than $50, 000. However, Gurman's opinion seems to suggest that Apple has abandoned the high-end option.
Mac Pro design
Will the new Mac Pro have a new design? Gurman has previously reported that Apple will not stop using the current Mac Pro design and wrote in the first issue of his 2023 newsletter: "the new Mac Pro looks the same as the 2019."
Given the problems Apple encountered the last time it scaled down the Mac Pro, it seems likely to keep the same design. We hope that the company will not make the same mistake again and that the new Mac Pro will maintain its time-tested design.
New Mac Pro: specification
In the July 2022 Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said Apple will use the new M2 Extreme chip in the high-end Mac Pro, with a lower price for M2 Ultra.
In a newsletter in December, he further explained that the M2 Ultra chip could provide 24 CPU cores, 76 graphics cores and up to 192GB memory, while the M2 Extreme chip could double it to 48 CPU cores and 152 graphics cores.
However, Gurman believes that Apple has abandoned the M2 Extreme chip "because of the complexity and cost of producing processors that basically consist of four M2 Max chips".
Will the new Mac Pro still be available in Intel?
There is no exact information at present.
According to yuuki_ans 's tweet in July 2021, Apple is likely to release the Mac Pro in 2022 using the Intel Ice Lake Xeon WMI 3300 workstation processor.
Brendan Shanks on Twitter also found references to Intel Ice Lake processors in Xcode 13 beta.
New Mac Pro memory and storage
Gurman said in his December 2022 newsletter that if equipped with a M2 Ultra chip, the memory would support up to 192GB. If Apple does decide to combine two M2 Ultra, then memory can support up to 384GB.
However, the current Intel Mac Pro provides up to 1.5TB of DDR4 ECC memory in 12 user-accessible DIMM slots, which is ahead of the theoretical level of the new Mac Pro.
But it's more likely to be a dramatic rethink of what the Pro desktop is. Unified memory is an important part of making M1 and M2 series Mac so fast, but binding memory to a chip means it cannot be expanded.
If the buyer wants to increase the memory at the point of sale, it will significantly push up the purchase price. Prices for the Mac Pro start at $5999, but if you buy a larger-capacity model through Apple, the price could increase by up to $14000.
Apple used to provide up to 8TB storage in the Mac Pro, and we expect the storage options to remain the same. The port may not change either, because Apple already provides four USB ports (two Thunderbolt 3 and two USB 3) and a pair of Ethernet ports.
However, Mac Pro has eight PCIe x16-sized slots that support many different types of PCIe cards, so you can easily add more ports. We assume that Apple will allow the use of expansion slots on M1 Mac Pro, but compatibility is an issue.
