CTOnews.com January 11, the data consultancy IDC today released PC market shipments data for the fourth quarter of 2022. Global shipments of traditional PC in the fourth quarter of 2022 were lower than expected, only 67.2 million units, down 28.1% from the same period last year.

Shipments in the fourth quarter of 2022 were similar to those in the fourth quarter of 2018, when the market was constrained by Intel's supply challenges. IDC says the boom in the PC market is over. However, despite the decline, annual shipments in 2022 are still much higher than before the outbreak, reaching 292.3 million units.

"average selling prices (ASP) have also declined in many channels as excess channel inventory over the past few months triggered discounts to stimulate demand," said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager of IDC mobile and consumer device trackers. "however, despite these efforts, inventory management of finished PC and components will remain a key issue in the coming quarters and may further affect average selling prices."

Supply-side activity suggests that many large suppliers enter 2023 with a cautious outlook, with it widely believed that some PC markets are likely to return to growth by the end of 2023, while the market as a whole will return to growth in 2024. There are several growth drivers in the business world, including the end of Microsoft's support for Windows 10 and the build update cycle.

In terms of shipments, all the major PC manufacturers fell in the fourth quarter of 2022 compared with the same period last year. CTOnews.com found that Apple fell by as little as 2.1% in the top five, while Dell fell the most by 37.2%. The top five are Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Apple and Asustek.

For 2022 as a whole, PC shipments fell 16.5% in 2022, with only Apple growing at 2.5% in the top five, while HP had the biggest decline in PC shipments in the top five in 2022, with 25.3%.
