Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thank you, Mr. Air, a netizen of CTOnews.com, for your clue delivery! CTOnews.com, January 11 (Xinhua)-- Apple has been trying to get rid of its dependence on other chipmakers. For example, the latest Mac computers have begun to fully use self-developed M-series chips to replace Intel processors.
Starting in 2024, Apple plans to design its own custom displays for mobile devices such as the iPhone and Apple Watch, and switching to its own display will make Apple less dependent on partners, including Samsung and LG, Bloomberg reported.
According to the report, Apple's transformation will begin with the high-end Apple Watch Ultra at the end of 2024, which will use microLED display technology. When the microLED display is introduced into the Apple Watch, Apple will extend it to the iPhone and other devices. These displays may be made by external suppliers, but Apple will master its own design technology.
Bloomberg also said that Apple is making "comprehensive efforts" to make more of its own components for iPhone, iPad and Mac, so it doesn't have to work with so many third-party component suppliers.
CTOnews.com previously reported that Bloomberg on Monday quoted people familiar with the matter as saying that Apple plans to replace Broadcom's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips with its own chip design in 2025. Apple, as a big customer, accounts for about 20% of Broadcom's revenue. Broadcom's shares closed down 2% after the news.
Apple is also looking to replace Qualcomm's 5G baseband chip, reporting that it will switch to its own baseband chip by the end of 2024 or early 2025.
Sources say Apple is already testing the microLED display for the Apple Watch, which will bring brighter, brighter colors and an improved visual angle. The displays "make the content look as if it were painted on glass," Bloomberg said.
The company initially planned to switch to microLED displays as early as 2020, but there are still technical challenges to overcome, according to sources. Apple also plans to use the microLED for larger display devices, but decided to focus on the Apple Watch first for cost reasons. Apple has spent billions of dollars developing display technology, and the shift is said to be one of Apple's most "critical projects."
Bloomberg warns that the target date for 2024 may be delayed to 2025, or if production difficulties remain, only a limited supply of new equipment may be available at first.
