CTOnews.com, January 11, according to TheElec, Samsung SDI plans to build a third electric vehicle battery factory in Hungary. Sources say the plant is under construction to supply batteries to auto giant BMW.

The plan was drawn up about a month after Samsung chairman Lee Jae-yong met with BMW chief executive Oliver Chips. The new plant will be built near Goed, where Samsung SDI already operates two factories.

Samsung converted the original display panel production facility there into a battery facility in 2016. The new plant being built for BMW is expected to be located across the road to the two plants. Samsung SDI has bought the land there and construction is expected to begin in the first half of this year.

The South Korean battery maker will produce square batteries, the source said. These new batteries will be shorter but wider than their Gen 5 batteries.

CTOnews.com learned that the height of the Gen 5 battery is about 90 to 100mm; the new battery will be 60mm. These are also known as low-height prismatic batteries. Samsung SDI's positive and negative tags will also be on the side rather than the top.

Samsung SDI designed these new batteries specifically for BMW. The purpose of reducing the height is to lower the center of gravity, which can increase the driving distance of the electric vehicle.

Similar measures have been taken for soft-pack batteries to make the batteries longer and change the position of the positive and negative plates.

Samsung SDI is also expected to use high nickel as the cathode. For the anode, it is expected to increase the amount of silicon through the application of silicon-carbon nanocomposites.
