CTOnews.com, January 11 (Xinhua)-- according to The Elec, Apple is preparing to expand the pill punching of the smart island medicine from the iPhone 14 Pro series to all iPhone 15 series models, including non-Pro versions of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. According to the report, Apple has placed orders with parts suppliers, including Samsung display, which has instead ordered 24.1 billion won (about 131 million yuan) worth of etching equipment from South Korean company Philoptics to produce smart island display screens.

The hole digging screen punches holes in the display panel where the front camera is located, and the screen shows a larger area than the bangs screen.

Apple is currently using this technology in two Pro models of its latest iPhone 14 series. Thanks to this, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max have a smart island feature: two holes, one for the front camera and the other for the Face ID.

All four models of the iPhone 15 are expected to have smart island capabilities.

Samsung revealed that it bought more laser etching equipment from supplier Philoptics earlier this month to punch holes in its screens.

CTOnews.com learned that in September last year, due to higher-than-expected demand for the iPhone 14 Pro Max, Samsung, the maker of OLED panels to Apple, showed that it had bought more production kits than planned from other suppliers such as AP System and HB Solution.

AP System supplies optically transparent resin deposition machines, while HB Solution provides edge blocking machines.

Apple has not yet applied facial recognition technology under the screen, and it is not expected to be equipped with the iPhone 15 series.

Off-screen facial recognition may be applied to future devices. Samsung has used off-screen technology in its high-end phones. It is an upgraded version of the punch display, which is now covered by the screen when the component below the punch is not in use.
