Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Ji Yinke Si, Sentinel for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com Google Chrome 109 is now available, an important release because it is the last Chrome version to support Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Microsoft recently dropped support for both operating systems.

The latest version of Chrome includes Cookies with independent partition status (CHIPS), Google's replacement for third-party cookies, which Google will retire in a few years. This implementation has an opt-in mechanism for developers to subscribe to top-level sites, which Google claims should enable "tracking-independent" use cases and not be limited to cross-site cookie blocking.

Another interesting feature in this version of Chrome is MathML, which is a better way to insert mathematical formulas in web pages because it reduces complexity and improves performance and consistency, and the ability to embed symbols in HTML and SVG. Another feature that might interest Web developers is enabling the Original Private File System (OPFS) component of the File System Access API on Android for faster performance when accessing files.

The drag feature also has some improvements in video conferencing, especially with regard to capturing the correct window through a feature called Conditional Focus. Similarly, Web developers can leverage a mechanism to play window audio captured by video conferencing applications through native speakers connected to the device. In addition, a bunch of CSS enhancements are listed below:

Auto range support for font descriptors inside @font-face rule

CSS `hyphenate-limit-chars` property

CSS 'lh' Length Unit

Snap border, outline and column-rule widths before layout to bring Chrome's Blink in line with WebKit (Safari) and Gecko (Firefox)

The new version of Chrome also supports WebTransport's built-in buffer (BYOB) reader to reduce unnecessary memory allocation and same-site cross-source pre-rendering triggered by the speculation rules API for faster page rendering, and adds a field to indicate HTTP response code when PerfumanceResourceTiming is used.

There are also multiple functions behind Origin and developer trials (flags). Here are some examples:

Developer trial (flag)

Compute Pressure: Allows websites to respond to CPU utilization changes to improve performance

CSS nesting: improving modularity and maintainability of styles

X-Requested-With in WebView: This header is disabled

Origin trial

Back/forward cache NotRestoredReason API: Let developers know why BFcache doesn't serve pages

Finally, the Event.path method will be deprecated because it is a non-standard API that causes compatibility issues with other browsers.

Chrome 109 is now available. If Chrome doesn't automatically update to version 109, go to Help> About Google Chrome to trigger the update when it becomes available. Google Chrome 110 will go into Beta on January 12, followed by an "early stable" release on February 1 and a stable release on February 7.
