CTOnews.com learned that Basic Apple Guy described the new wallpaper in detail in a blog post:

To mark the 16th anniversary of the release of iPhone, I am proud to release a wallpaper inspired by images closely related to the debut of iPhone.

I am very proud of the finished product and excited to share it on this important anniversary. This wallpaper can be used for Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and, of course, iPhone. Please enjoy.

This wallpaper comes from Apple's poster when it released the original iPhone, which read "The first 30 years were just the beginning. Welcome to 2007." (we have just entered the first 30-year development cycle, please look forward to our 2007 new product).

Basic Apple Guy went on to say:

This picture features light emitted from the bottom to a black apple logo against a blue fog background. Jobs relied on this warm-up map to attract media and consumers just before Apple launched the original iPhone.

"every once in a while, there is a revolutionary product that changes everything," Jobs declared at the time. The original iPhone has proved his point.
