CTOnews.com Two different sources say Apple's iPhone 16 series, which will be launched next year (and likely only for iPhone 16 Pro models), will feature an under-screen Face ID sensor. This means that Apple can completely eliminate the smart island (or bangs) and keep only 1 proactive circular punch. But the question is, is Apple willing to shelve the Smart Island feature after only two years?

Ross Young, CEO of DSCC, a screen supply chain consulting firm, reported last spring that Apple had already prepared the in-screen Face ID sensor for the 2024 iPhone. This was later confirmed by Tianfeng Securities analyst Guo Mingxi, who specifically pointed out in his memo that Apple's goal is to launch an under-screen Face ID sensor for the 2024 iPhone 16 Pro model.

A report from Apple's supply chain continues to echo that sentiment today. As Apple brings Smart Island to standard iPhone 15 models, it is expected to move Face ID below the iPhone display, starting with next year's iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, the supply chain report said.

Moving all of the hardware needed for Face ID under the iPhone's display isn't an easy task, but it's clearly something Apple is going to accomplish next year.

But in addition to visually combining the two facets, Dynamic Island integrates with iOS in a number of different ways. You can interact with Dynamic Island and manage notifications, navigation and audio playback. The new Live Activity feature in iOS 16 is also deeply integrated with Dynamic Island.

If Apple succeeds in moving the Face ID component below the iPhone 16 Pro display, it could do it with a single punch for the selfie camera and nothing else. Apple iPhone doesn't need a pill-like punch, so there's no point in Smart Island continuing to exist.
