CTOnews.com, January 10, BMW Group announced that BMW digital keys can now be shared across platforms, especially between iPhone and Android devices. The digital key feature was first unveiled on the BMW 5-Series in 2021. Previously, digital keys could only be shared through Apple's iMessage, which meant that only iPhone could be used as digital keys.

With the update of the system functionality, it is now possible to simply send a link via email, text or chat service to share BMW digital keys. The link can also be shared through Apple's AirDrop or Android Nearby Share. BMW says recipients don't need a specific app or even a BMW ID to use digital keys. However, iPhone users have an additional advantage: links are received and activated on iPhone, which can also be added to Apple Watch.

CTOnews.com has learned that this feature applies to all new cars with BMW digital keys or enhanced BMW digital keys, while older cars can get this feature if they use a remote software upgrade to update their software to "22-11" or later.

But there is one small caveat: currently only iPhone and Google devices are supported. For devices that can use this feature, up to five users can share a digital key.
