Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Coje_He for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, January 10, extended Security Update (ESU) support for Windows 7 ends today, which means that Microsoft will no longer release security updates for the system through Patch Tuesday, and users will have to upgrade to the supported Windows version or rely on unofficial patches such as 0patch patches.

Oddly enough, Microsoft seems to have recently enabled native UEFI and secure startup (Secure Boot) features on Windows 7. Microsoft made this major change to Windows 7 in the September patch Tuesday (KB5017361), but it was not officially mentioned in the update note.

CTOnews.com learned that UEFI (Unified Extensible firmware Interface) secure boot is a safety standard designed to ensure that computers only boot using software trusted by OEM (original equipment manufacturer). It can help computers resist virus attacks and malware infections. When this setting is enabled, the computer will only load drivers with Microsoft certificates. Secure startup detects tampering with the boot loader, key operating system files, and the unauthorized option ROM by verifying its digital signature. They will be blocked until systems are detected to be attacked or infected.

It feels strange to add this feature to Windows 7 after all these years, especially at a time when the operating system is dying.

Here is a screenshot showing the option to enable VMware internal security startup in Windows 7.

However, this feature seems to have bug, because many users who try to enable UEFI and secure startup get stuck at the Windows startup flag, because the VGA.sys and VGApnp.sys display drivers have not been updated. This means that UEFI type 3 systems that do not support compatibility support modules (CSM) or legacy mode will require UefiSeven solutions to display problems.

In short, if you don't know much about computers, it's best to upgrade to Windows 10 or newer.
