Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com January 10 news, TSMC held a mass production and expansion ceremony of 3nm in Tainan Science Park on December 29, officially announcing the launch of large-scale production of 3nm. Although Samsung started N3 (3nm) process chip manufacturing as early as half a year ago, it seems that the yield of production has declined seriously because it has just adopted GAA.

Of course, Samsung did not sit idly by, after the industry said it had teamed up with IBM, Silicon Frontline Technology and other companies to improve the yield of 3nm, hoping to win some orders for Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen3 for its phones.

According to TSMC's own account, the yield of its 3nm and 5nm was basically the same at the beginning of its launch. By contrast, when Samsung 3nm GAA first went into production, the yield was only a pitiful 20%, and the scrap rate was ridiculously high. Recently, however, it has been reported that Samsung's 3nm yield has improved significantly and is now "close to perfection."

A Samsung executive said in an interview that Samsung's first-generation 3nm process yield is close to perfect compared with the previously troubled yield problem, and the second-generation 3nm chip technology is also developing rapidly, according to the Korea Daily Business Daily. In addition, the previously rumored 3nm yield of 90 per cent of TSMC is exaggerated and may actually be more than 50 per cent.

CTOnews.com has reported that TSMC began mass production of 3nm FinFET chips at the end of last year. According to a report published by Business Next, according to experts who specialize in semiconductors, the yield of TSMC's 3nm process was estimated to be about 60-70 per cent at the time and, in some cases, more than 70 per cent.

Tuyuan Unsplash Korean media reports further pointed out that after Samsung and TSMC have entered the era of 3nm process, the future 3nm process will become the mainstream of the wafer foundry market. Therefore, it is expected that by 2025, the output value of the 3nm process market will be as high as US $25.5 billion, surpassing the US $19.3 billion estimated by the 5nm process at that time.

In the third quarter of 2022, TSMC still ranks first in the global foundry market with a market share of 53.4%, while Samsung, which ranks second, has a market share of only 16.4%, according to data from TrendForce, a market research unit. Therefore, in the fierce competition in the market, the 3nm process will become the key to the main competition between the two companies in the future.
