According to the news on January 10, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, said that it will no longer update the original virtual reality device Quest 1, and will remove some social functions of Quest 1. But the company said it would also provide "major bug fixes and security patches" to Quest 1 by 2024.

According to an email notification sent to users by Meta, the company will stop providing new features for Quest 1, and most of the original features will continue to function properly, but users will not be able to "create or join parties" in the future. And "users who currently have access to Meta Horizon Home social services will lose these features on March 5, 2023." Meta also said that Quest 1 will receive "major bug fixes and security patches" by 2024.

The original Quest, launched under the Oculus brand in 2019, is the predecessor of the Quest 2 virtual reality headset released in 2020. Over the years, the functional updates of the two devices have been basically the same, but the hardware configurations are fundamentally different.

Quest 2 has built-in Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chip. The chip, released in 2020, is designed for augmented reality and virtual reality devices. By contrast, the original Quest uses the Snapdragon 835 chipset released by Qualcomm in 2017 and uses the Kryo 280kernel. It is speculated that Meta stopped the functional updates of the original Quest this time, possibly because of the trouble in developing new features that match hardware devices, or because budget tightening and layoffs made the company do not want to continue to spend money on old hardware, or Qualcomm stopped developing support for the functions of old chips.

Last month, John Carmack, a prominent programmer and Oculus executive, announced his resignation from Meta. Before that, he had sharply criticized the company's underuse of hardware.

While this will disappoint Quest 1 users, there are already signs that Meta will stop updating the device. Last year, Meta took some steps to prevent virtual reality Battle Royale Games "Population: One" from running on Quest 1.
