The South Korean battery maker claims that its technology aims to reduce the charging time of electric vehicle batteries to 18 minutes, nearly half of the current 30-minute charging time for electric vehicles.

According to SK On's website, in 2018, the company received a request from a global automaker to make an electric vehicle (EV) battery that can be charged quickly within 18 minutes. The company agreed to the manufacturer's request, so it developed the SF battery (Super Fast Battery, super fast battery), which SK On demonstrated at this year's CES 2023. And won the Best Innovation Honor Award in the category of "embedded Technology".

It is reported that the key to fast charging is to reduce the anode resistance when lithium is inserted into the battery. In order to achieve this goal, SK On Company applied its unique coating technology, greatly reduced the resistance, and proposed a new battery material to improve the charging speed. The company also uses a manufacturing solution that minimizes the use of SBR, an adhesive that produces battery resistance during the coating process.

Generally speaking, fast charging shortens the life of the battery. For example, if the warranty standard for electric car batteries is set to 1000 cycles, then the standard for fast charging is set to 400 times.

But for SF batteries, the battery life is not affected by fast charging and can reach 1000 cycles, which SK On says is the result of the company's rigorous testing.

SK On completed the development of SF batteries in 2019, and electric models equipped with SF batteries made their debut on the market in 2021. The company now aims to make batteries that can be recharged quickly in 10 minutes.
