According to the news in the morning of January 9, Beijing time, Marc Benioff, co-founder of US business software company Salesforce and about to become the company's only CEO, said at a staff meeting last Thursday that the company may have more layoffs in the future.

▲ Mark Benioff (Marc Benioff) the virtual meeting was held the day after Salesforce announced 10 per cent job cuts, through which the company cut more than 7000 jobs.

Just a few hours later, Amazon also said it would lay off 18000 employees. For the first time in recent years, technology companies have scaled back their workforce as they prepare for slowing growth, rising interest rates and a potential recession.

Benioff expressed concern about the efficiency of some sales jobs. Benioff told employees that about half of Salesforce account managers created more than 95 per cent of deals, according to two people who attended the meeting via video. Another person revealed that the meeting was originally scheduled for an hour, but in the end it lasted more than two hours. Benioff said the problem of inefficiency mainly came from new account managers, according to one attendee.

During the pandemic and in the years before it, Salesforce expanded rapidly as cloud computing applications soared in popularity. Part of the company's growth has been driven by big acquisitions such as Slack and Tableau.

Now Salesforce is cutting jobs because of slowing revenue growth and aggressive investors worried about operating leverage. In November, Bret Taylor, who is seen as the successor to Benioff, abruptly announced his departure after a year as co-chief executive. He will formally leave at the end of January.

Last month, Benioff sent a Slack message to all employees asking for ways to make new employees more productive. At a meeting last Thursday, Benioff expressed dissatisfaction with the reports of his remarks. Benioff said at the meeting: "Trust is one of our core values," according to one of the participants. " It took Benioff a long time to answer questions about the future of Salesforce, the person said.

Salesforce did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
