CTOnews.com After more than six years of support, Linux Kernel 4.9 ended support this morning after receiving the 4.9.337 update. The kernel is currently appropriately marked EOL on kernel.org, meaning it will no longer receive maintenance and security updates.

CTOnews.com learned that Linux Kernel 4.9 was launched on December 11, 2016, mainly expanding sharing support for XFS file systems, introducing hardware latency trackers to detect firmware induced latency, Greybus support for Project Ara, a more efficient BPF parser, a new optional BBR TCP congestion control algorithm, a virtual mapped kernel stack, and more.

Due to its Long Term Support (LTS) status, Linux kernel 4.9 is likely to be used on mass-produced devices by large companies that produce Linux-based hardware. But it's time to move to a newer kernel.

Kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman announced earlier today that Linux Kernel 4.9 will no longer be supported from now on, urging users to upgrade to the newer LTS (Long Term Support) series.

"Note that this is the last 4.9.y kernel to be released," Kroah-Hartman wrote in today's mailing list announcement. This kernel is now at the end of its life, you should at least move to 4.14.y, 6.1.y is the better choice."
