CTOnews.com, January 8 (Xinhua)-- NASA's Earth radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) will crash into the atmosphere tomorrow after nearly 40 years in space. NASA calculates that most of the satellite's components will burn out after entering the atmosphere, but very few of them may reach the surface.

NASA says the destruction by falling into the atmosphere is aimed at getting the satellite out of orbit more gracefully and reducing the risk of space debris. CTOnews.com learned that the satellite was launched in 1984, when there was not so much space junk in space.

According to a revised version released by NASA in November 2019, any risk of the impact of off-orbit satellites on people on Earth is less than 1/10000. The risks of old satellites are relatively higher.

"NASA expects most satellites to burn up as they pass through the atmosphere, but some components are expected to survive re-entry," the agency wrote in a statement. the risk of injury to anyone on earth is very low-about one in 9400.

CTOnews.com learned that NASA estimates that the ESRB satellite will enter a 17-hour window around 06:40 EDT on January 8 (07:40 Beijing time on January 9), and it is not known where the debris might land.
