CTOnews.com, January 7 (Xinhua)-- Dutch company Lightyear launched its first solar electric car, Lightyear 0, earlier last year, and now it has launched its second model, named Lightyear 2, on CES 2023.

CTOnews.com learned that Lightyear is a Dutch electric car startup dedicated to making solar cars. The goal is to produce a car that does not rely on the power grid to further reduce emissions.

According to the official notice, the Lightyear 2 still looks like a Lightyear 0 coupe with a higher ground clearance, almost making it look like a two-door crossover.

Lex Hoefsloot, CEO and co-founder of Lightyear, said: "Lightyear 2 will quickly realize our mission of providing clean transportation for everyone and everywhere. This is the first electric vehicle that allows consumers to give priority to sustainable development without affecting practicality."

Like the Lightyear 0, the biggest difference between Lightyear 2 and traditional electric cars is that solar panels are installed on the roof, hood and rear of the car, and the company says Lightyear 2 can halve a driver's carbon dioxide emissions over a lifetime. The car offers a range of more than 800km, which is much more than the Lightyear 0 with a WLTP rating of 625km. It is reported that Lightyear 0 solar panels are said to provide a range of 70 kilometers per day under ideal sunlight conditions, but the official figure for Lightyear 2 has not been released. It is worth mentioning that Lightyear 2 can also power the grid.

Many parameters of the Lightyear 2 have not been disclosed, and the company said it is expected to begin mass production by the end of 2025, with the first markets in the United States, Britain and the European Union. Surprisingly, the expected price of the car is less than 40,000 euros (about 290000 yuan), which is much cheaper than the price of more than $260000 (1.781 million yuan) for the Lightyear 0.
