CTOnews.com, January 7, Samsung, Huawei, OPPO, vivo, Motorola and Glory have all launched collapsible phones, but the existing up and down and left and right folding methods are only relatively mature commercial solutions at present. Samsung and LG demonstrated a number of collapsible concepts on CES 2023, exploring the changes that collapsible screens bring to the shape of digital products.

At the Samsung booth, Samsung showed off a number of collapsible devices, the most noteworthy of which is the Flex Hybrid. It folds and extends the screen, closing it like a laptop and opening it to show a tablet-like screen.

But the really amazing factor is that you can expand the screen size and even change its aspect ratio as you unfold. Slide out on the right side of the screen, and the display size expands from 10.5 inches to 12.4 inches. In a demonstration at its CES booth, Samsung showed how the display automatically adjusts to show more content as the screen expands.

Samsung has other ideas for morphing tablets, too. It also shows the concept of Flex Slidable Duet on CES, a screen that can be expanded to both sides to provide more viewing area for playing games or watching movies. According to Samsung's press release, the display size is 13 to 14 inches, but can be expanded to 17.3 inches. There is also a version of the concept that can only expand the screen in one direction, which Samsung aptly calls the Flex Slidable Solo.

CTOnews.com learned that LG demonstrated two main foldable tablet concepts on CES: an 8-inch tablet that folds inward and outward, and a 17-inch device that folds in half. LG claims that the 17-inch display is almost completely crease-free, positioning it as a giant tablet or a more portable laptop external display.
