In its January 2023 ranking of programming languages released today, the company named C++ as the best programming language of 2022.

This year's runner-up was the second most popular language C, with a 3.82% increase in popularity, while the No. 1 language, Python, increased by 2.78%. Java slipped from third to fourth place, an increase of 1.55%.

"C++ is popular because of its excellent performance as a high-level object-oriented language," said Paul Jensen, chief executive of Tiobe. "as a result, fast and huge software systems (more than millions of lines of code) can be developed with C++ without a 'maintenance nightmare'."

He also attributed C++ 's popularity to the relatively new December 20 update. This is the latest version of C++, standardized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and introducing interesting features such as modules.

After the formal adoption of Rust in the Linux kernel version 6.1, the image of Rust has grown rapidly over the past year, clearing the way for writing drivers in Rust.

In many ways, C++ is an interesting choice for Tiobe's language of the year. Mark Russinovich, chief technology officer of Microsoft Azure, recently said that developers should avoid using C # or Cellular languages in new projects and use Rust instead because of its memory security advantages, and even urged the industry to abandon these languages.
