CTOnews.com learned that Tesla has lowered the price of its Model 3 and Model Y cars by about 10% in Japan for the first time since 2021, with the Model 3 rear-wheel drive version currently at 5.369 million yen (278,000 yuan).

Reuters quoted people familiar with the matter as saying the coordinated price cuts were part of a plan to stimulate demand for Tesla's Shanghai Superplant, which is already the company's largest single production center. This is Tesla's first major move since Tom Zhu was appointed to lead global production and delivery.

Tesla Vice President Tao Lin said Tesla's price cuts in China reflected numerous engineering innovations, starting from "first principles" and insisting on cost pricing. Respond to the call of the state with practical actions, promote economic development and release consumption potential.

Data from major analysts show that Tesla's deliveries in China hit their lowest level in five months in December 2022. In the first 11 months of this year, BYD Han series (including plug-in hybrids) sold more than twice as much as Model 3 in China, according to the association.

In addition, after Tesla cut prices, the Model 3 starts at the same level as BYD's best-selling Han EV. According to Reuters calculations, after considering factors such as material and labor costs, Model 3 and Model Y cars are already priced 24% to 32% lower in China than in the United States.
