According to foreign media reports, in December 2022, Tesla Model Y became the best-selling car in the UK, while Model 3 became the second best-selling car in the country.

While 2022 will be challenging for Tesla, the company's sales in the UK have been strong last year, with its Model 3 and Model Y being the best-selling cars several times in different months.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Model Y sales in the UK were 10664 in December 2022, ranking first. The Model Y was followed by the Model 3, which sold 5704 units. In third place was the Nissan Qashqai, an affordable compact hatchback that sold 3506 units, one-third as many as the Model Y.

For all of 2022, Model Y sold 35551 units in the UK, making it the third-best-selling car in the country, behind only Nissan Qashqai (42704 units sold) and Vauxhall Corsa (35910 units sold).

Tesla's strong sales are indicative of the overall trend in the UK car market. In 2022, registrations for gasoline-powered vehicles fell by 10.4 percent and for diesel-powered vehicles by 38.9 percent, compared with a 40.1 percent increase for pure electric vehicles.

SMMT statistics also show that the UK new car market rose for the fifth consecutive month in December 2022, up 18.3%, with 128462 new car registrations. Despite potential demand, total new car registrations fell 2 percent to 1.61 million in 2022.
