Academician Xu Jie was born in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province on April 7, 1937. He studied in the Department of Engineering Physics of Tsinghua University from 1955 to 1961. He has served as chief engineer of the first institute and three institutes of the second Ministry of Machinery Industry, deputy director of the Institute of reactor Engineering and Technology of China Atomic Energy Research Institute, and chief engineer of the Fast reactor Engineering Department. He has served as a member of the national "863" fast reactor expert group, a Chinese representative of the IAEA fast reactor working group and the Sino-French nuclear energy cooperation fast reactor working group, an adjunct professor of Tsinghua University and Xi'an Jiaotong University, and the chief expert in the fast reactor field of CNNC. He was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2011.

Academician Xu Jie is one of the pioneers and founders of China's fast reactor industry, and is known as "the father of China's fast reactor". According to the obituary of the China Institute of Atomic Energy, Academician Xu Jie promoted the fast reactor to be included in the major project of the national "863" plan, put forward the "three-step" development strategy of fast reactor technology, led the construction of China's experimental fast reactor, and established a Chinese model for the great-leap-forward development of fast reactors, which has made outstanding contributions to the sustainable development of nuclear energy in China.
