CTOnews.com January 5 news, According to the obituary of Wuhan Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Researcher of Wuhan Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics of Chinese Academy of Sciences Ge Xiurun died in Wuhan at 20:47 on January 4,2023 at the age of 88 due to invalid treatment.

Ge Xiurun is a famous expert in rock mechanics and engineering in China. He is one of the earliest experts and scholars who introduced finite element numerical analysis method in geotechnical engineering in China. He is one of the leaders in rock slope engineering and underground engineering research and treatment. He is a pioneer in rock mechanics test technology and ancient cultural heritage protection engineering.

CTOnews.com learned that Academician Ge Xiurun's biography shows that Ge Xiurun was born in Nanhui, Shanghai on July 12,1934. In 1952, he was admitted to the Department of Water Resources of Tsinghua University. In 1954, he entered the Odessa Institute of Architecture and Engineering of the Soviet Union to study and obtained the Certificate of Excellent Graduates of the Soviet Union. After returning to China in 1959, he worked in Wuhan Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1995, he was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Ge Xiurun has made outstanding contributions to the development of rock mechanics and engineering in China. He is one of the earliest scholars who introduced finite element method into rock mechanics and engineering in China. He took the lead in proposing vector sum analysis method for slope stability in the world. He developed the first rock mechanics multifunctional testing machine RMT, real-time CT scanning loading equipment, digital panoramic drilling camera system, three-dimensional ground stress robot and other pioneering rock mechanics equipment in China. Innovatively put forward the original site protection scheme of the Three Gorges "No.1 National Treasure" Baiheliang "Pressureless Container," which made the world's first ancient hydrological station come to life; It has made outstanding contributions to key technical problems of major national projects and cultural relics protection such as Daye Iron Mine, Three Gorges Water Control Project, Gezhouba Water Control Project, Geheyan Hydropower Station, Xiaowan Hydropower Station, Ertan Hydropower Station, Qinghai-Tibet Railway, Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes and Datong Yungang Grottoes.
