GM sold 2.2 million vehicles in the U.S. in 2022, up 2.5 percent year-over-year, putting it back on top of Toyota as the U.S. auto sales champion of the year. Of these 2.2 million vehicles, 623,261 were sold in the fourth quarter of 2022.

GM's biggest seller was its popular Chevrolet brand, which sold 413,560 units in the fourth quarter of 2022, followed by GMC (143,645 units sold), Cadillac (39,135 units sold) and Buick (26,921 units sold), according to foreign media.

At the moment, GM sells large, gas-guzzling pickup trucks and SUVs. In the past year, the company sold more than 1.1 million midsize pickups and full size trucks, including SUVs, which accounted for nearly 50 percent of its annual sales.

While GM became the largest U.S. automaker in 2022, it lagged behind traditional and emerging competitors in EV sales. To this end, the company plans to launch more electric models and accelerate the production of electric vehicles to accelerate the transition to electrification.

In November 2022, foreign media reported that GM plans to launch more than 15 pure electric vehicles based on Ultium platform in China by 2025 to catch up with the leader in the world's largest electric vehicle market. The company says it will produce 1 million electric vehicles annually in China by 2025.

Previously, the company had said it would produce 400,000 electric vehicles for the North American market from 2022 to the first half of 2024, a slower timeline than previously forecast. In addition, the company plans to accelerate electric vehicle production in North America and China from 2023 to 2025.
