CTOnews.com Pinta 2.1, an open-source, free, cross-platform and simple image editing and painting program written in GTK#for GNU / Linux, macOS and Windows, has been released and is now available as a major update for download, bringing numerous new features and improvements.

Pinta 2.0 was released a year ago, and Pinta 2.1 now introduces exciting changes such as support for WebP modern image formats (although Linux users must first install the webp-pixbuf-loader package), new "transparent mode" for gradient tools, the ability to open files from virtual file systems, and support for standard GTK dialogs.

CTOnews.com learned that there are many improvements in this major update to fix screenshots taken under Wayland, speed up canvas rendering, load images or palette files with unknown extensions but valid content, and make Pinta more useful when using dark themes and HiDPI high resolution screens.

Pinta 2.1 also improves the selection movement handle and shape control point handle, making them easier for users to use when working with enlarged or small images. In addition, support for the.ora file format has been improved to include flat images in the archive when saved and to and from hidden layers correctly.

Most importantly, the file dialog has been updated to use MIME types on Linux and macOS systems, allowing valid image files with unknown extensions to be included in the image file filter. The Line/Curve tool has also been updated to no longer force Ctrl to start drawing shapes when the mouse cursor is outside the canvas.

Pinta 2.1 is powered by the. NET 7 framework, but developers say they will continue to build applications with long-term support for the. NET 6 framework. When building an application from the source tarball,. NET 6 is used if. NET 7 does not exist on the user's system.

This update addresses many bugs and issues, making Pinta more stable and reliable. Specifically aimed at Linux users, Pinta now works better under KDE Plasma Wayland sessions. More can be found on the GitHub website.
