CTOnews.com, January 5, Panasonic announced the launch of LUMIX S5II and S5IIX, the company's latest full-frame non-reflective camera that focuses on video recording.

These are Panasonic's first cameras with PDAF or phase detection autofocus, getting rid of the long-standing DFD or defocus depth technology based on contrast detection. Although it can be used in photos, this method is usually slow and unreliable for video, and produces continuous pulses in the out-of-focus area.

Panasonic S5II and S5IIX solve this problem by providing a completely improved focus system with the new 24.2MP 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor. The new phase detection autofocus system, which combines PDAF and contrast detection system, has 779 autofocus for continuous human and animal tracking. Panasonic S5II and S5IIX support the use of L bayonets shared with Leica and Shima.

The video recording performance of Panasonic S5II and S5IIX is comparable to that of S1H. Users can choose the recording option of 6K 10-bit 4:2:0 or 4K 10-bit 4:2:2. The new cooling method with built-in fan and radiator enables uninterrupted 4K recording without overheating.

These cameras claim a dynamic range of more than 14 frames with V-Log / V-Gamut and support real-time LUT for in-camera color adjustment by uploading LUT directly to the camera.

CTOnews.com learned that Panasonic S5II and S5IIX also brought a new image stabilization system, consisting of a 5-axis Body IS and a 2-axis lens-based OIS, suitable for photo and video shooting. Video shooting also acquires Active IS mode, which optimizes horizontal, vertical and rotation correction rates by determining the state of camera jitter.

Other features include dual native ISO, 9fps AFS / 7fps AFC continuous shot mode with mechanical shutter and 30fps AFS / AFC with electronic shutter, 48kHz / 24-bit internal microphone recording and 96kHz / 24-bit with external microphone, full size HDMI port, 3680K point OLED viewfinder, 3.0inch full definition 1840K touch screen, USB-C charging, splash and dust proof magnesium alloy die-casting body, dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

CTOnews.com learned that the difference between Panasonic S5II and S5IIX is that the latter can output RAW video through HDMI, full-frame and ProRes recording on SSD, and wired and wireless streaming media for real-time streaming and USB network sharing.

The Panasonic LUMIX S5II camera, which costs $2000 (about 13820 yuan), will go on sale in January 2023. The S5IIX camera, priced at $2200 (about 15202 yuan), will go on sale in May 2023.
